Quick rehearsal reminders

On Saturday, January 7th, there is a mandatory parents' meeting at 9AM and should run for about an hour. One parent/guardian for each child/family represented needs to attend!

An updated rehearsal schedule is available for download (here or here): there's no school on January 17th, so there's no rehearsal that day. Oops!

Happy holidays!

A great big THANK YOU!! goes out to our cast for an amazing first two rehearsals! You all really impressed not only our new team members, Ms. Sunnergren and Mrs. A, but you impressed Mrs. Taylor and Ms. Neville, too!

A few notes before you rush off to open presents and eat lots of yummy food with friends and family (oh, AND get some rest and stay bundled up and don't get sick!):

The rehearsal schedule is available for download at two different places: through ge.tt and through mediafire (both are file-sharing sites -- click through the links and click on the "2011-2012 GV Musical Schedule" to download the schedule). If you have trouble with both of them and still cannot download the schedule, please drop us an email and we will email it to you.

Rehearsal tracks are also available for download at either the ge.tt page or the mediafire page. Again, if neither site works for you for some reason, email us.

Principal characters and understudies: start memorizing your music and dialogue! We are jumping right in to blocking and vocal rehearsals and need for you to be on your A game! Thanks :)

Storytellers: do your best to be familiar with all of the storyteller songs and dialogue. You do not need to memorize it all, but we want rehearsals to run smoothly, and if we can just throw lines or song pieces at you and you already know them, that'd be awesome! We know you can rise to the challenge :)

Featured villagers: do your best to be familiar with the songs "Pray" and "Pray (Reprise)," as they are YOUR songs :) We will not get to them right away, but we want you all to be prepared for when we start singing and blocking those songs. The first "Pray" is available for download. The reprise has the same tune and the lyrics are in your scripts.

Ensemble: start listening to the songs that are available for download (links are above!), and get into the island groove!

Keep yourselves healthy, have a great holiday
and a happy new year and see you after school on January 3rd!!

Rehearsal schedule

Hello everyone! Hope you're enjoying your weekend and getting ready for our first two rehearsals next week.

As we start to learn the music in rehearsals, it would be a big help if our cast members got familiar with the Once On This Island soundtrack on their own. Our rehearsal period is two months, so the more you learn outside of rehearsals, the more we can get done when we're together. I will be uploading songs from the Once On This Island Jr. version to the blog for you all to download, listen to, and get familiar with (the Jr. version songs are slightly different than the Original Broadway Cast recording for any of you who own that CD).

Click here to download the first few songs from the show:
Prologue/We Dance
One Small Girl/Waiting for Life
And The Gods Heard Her Prayer/Rain

* As always, leave us a comment below if you have any questions or trouble downloading the music

Also available is the finalized rehearsal schedule for January and February. It is very similar to the tentative schedule we gave you with your audition packet. There are a few changes to the small group/principal rehearsals (some moved from Monday night to Wednesday night), and we canceled rehearsal on Wednesday, January 11th since so many of you are going to be at the instrumental concert that night.

Click here to download a Word Document version of the schedule.

Please let us know if you have any questions, and we'll see you at our first two rehearsals this week:
Tuesday, December 20th from 2:30 - 4:45 - FULL CAST
Thursday, December 22nd from 2:30 - 4:45 - FULL CAST

See you soon!!!

Rehearsals & scheduling conflicts

We hope you're as excited to get started with this year's production as we are! Don't forget, our first rehearsal is after school on Tuesday, December 20th, followed by another rehearsal after school on Thursday, December 22nd. It is crucial that you not only attend these first two rehearsals, but that you are committed to our rehearsal schedule.

We have not yet finalized the rehearsal schedule for January & February, but it will be very similar to what was handed out with the audition packets:

  • Full cast: Tuesday and Thursday rehearsals after school
  • Full cast: Saturday morning rehearsals
  • Small groups/principal roles: Monday or Wednesday night rehearsals (depending on the week)
The schedule will be finalized & posted here on the blog by December 20th.

As we looked at your audition packets, we noticed some of you had conflicts that you could mold around our rehearsal schedule, and some of you had one or two conflicts, which is fine. However, we also noticed some of you who are interested in the ski trips sponsored by Ski Club...

Please note: you are allowed a total of 3 absences and only ONE of them may be a Saturday. Missing more than 3 rehearsals or more than 1 Saturday will cause us to re-evaluate your role in the show. Please adjust your calendars accordingly. Thanks!

Of course, we understand if you are sick or have a family emergency, but otherwise, you must be committed so we can put on the best show possible! Contact us at gvmusical@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Thanks and see you soon!

Callbacks

Hi everyone! Thanks for trying out for Once On This Island! We have some really tough decisions to make... you were all so wonderful! Those who are being asked to come to callbacks will be receiving both an email and a phone call tonight. If you have not been called back, do not worry! It does not mean you have not been cast in the show. It does not mean you didn't get a part, either. We have some roles that are particularly hard to cast and we need to see more from certain people, so stay tuned and wait for the cast list to be posted next week!

---------------

For those who have been called back, below are the lyrics to the new songs. You can download the songs and the callback lyrics by clicking here. Please let us know if you have any trouble with the new material by emailing gvmusical@gmail.com. Remember to stay cool and confident and show us what you've got! We're excited to see how you all play off of each other :)

Songs to prepare for Thursday:
  • Ti Moune: Waiting for Life
  • Mama Euralie & TonTon Julian: Ti Moune (singing your character's respective parts... we want to hear you sing together!)
  • Female gods: Mama Will Provide, Ti Moune
  • Male gods: Rain, Pray
  • Storytellers: Pray

Pray

Storyteller 1:
He roared down the road like the devil himself

Storyteller 2:
Going too fast around the curves

Storyteller 3:
Sent us scrambling off the road like chickens

All:
He has what he deserves!

Storyteller 1:
Papa Ge wants him

Storyteller 2:
And Papa Ge will have him

Storyteller 3:
The boy is dying before our eyes

All:
Help him, hide him!

Storyteller 4:
No! Don't touch him, better leave him where he lies. Even a wealthy man sometimes dies.

-----

Mama Will Provide

Asaka (spoken):
You never been away from the sea, child!
You gonna need a helping hand!
A fish has got to learn to swim on land!
Hahaha, woooo!

(sung):
Walk with me, little girl, don't you be afraid
Follow me, little girl, let me be your guide
A pretty thing like you
Will need a thing or two
And whatever you need, Mama will provide!
Whoa-ooh-oh-oh-ohhhh!

-----

Ti Moune

Mama Euralie

What can I say to stop you now?
Now that you’ve heard your drum and seen your dancers
Now that you think your heart has all the answers

Who knows how high those mountains climb?
Who knows how deep those rivers flow?
Who knows how wrong a dream can go, Ti Moune

TonTon Julian:
I won’t be there to guide your way

Mama Euralie:
To braid your hair or dry your tears

Both:
As we have done these many years, Ti Moune, Ti Moune

TonTon Julian:
What you are, we made you
What we gave, you took
Now you run without one backward look

Mama Euralie:
You’ll find some other boy to save
Some other life that you can share

Both:
Your heart is young, new dreams are everywhere
Choose your dreams with care, Ti Moune

Good luck everyone!

Grades & auditions

The GVMS musical is treated the same as other extracurricular activities in that students must be able to maintain acceptable grades in order to participate.
Once rehearsals begin, students who have Cs or lower in more than one subject and/or who have poor Quality of a Learner grades in more than one subject will need to take time off from rehearsals to boost their grades. If a student misses too many rehearsals, however, they will have to resign from the show.

So, now is the time to start focusing on those grades! Make sure both your letter grades and Quality of a Learner grades are acceptable in order to participate in the show! Poor grades at this point will not keep you from auditioning, but if your grades do not improve by the time rehearsals begin, you will not be allowed to participate in the show.

See you soon!

Thursday, November 10, 2011

Quick note

For the song, Ti Moune, Whether the student is a boy or a girl, they should be prepared to sing the whole selection in their respective vocal part.

Though the song is split between Mama and TonTon, for the purposes of our audition, it will be treated as a solo.

Hope this helps!

One more update...

Here is an update to the lyrics that match the new versions of the songs, which are available here. Minor changes are highlighted in yellow. You will only be responsible for the first portion of the songs.

WAITING FOR LIFE
A stranger in white, in a car
Going somewhere, going far
How it must feel to go racing wherever you please
Flying as free as a bird with his tail in the breeze
Even the fish in the sea must be longing to fly
Catching a glimpse of a stranger in white racing by

bridge & verse removed

A stranger... racing down the beach
Racing to places... I was meant to reach
My stranger, one day you’ll arrive
The car will stop and in I’ll hop
And off we’ll drive... we’ll drive!

-----

TI MOUNE
What can I say to stop you now?
Now that you’ve heard your drum and seen your dancers
Now that you think your heart has all the answers

Who knows how high those mountains climb
Who knows how deep those rivers flow
Who knows how wrong a dream can go, Ti Moune

I won’t be there to guide your way
To braid your hair or dry your tears
As we have done these many years, Ti Moune, Ti Moune

What you are, we made you
What we gave, you took
Now you run without one backward look

You’ll find some other boy to save
Some other life that you can share
Your heart is young, new dreams are everywhere
Choose your dreams with care, Ti Moune

-----

RAIN
Let there be no moon, let the clouds race by
Where the road meets the sea, let the tide be high
Let there be a girl walking by the sea
And let there be... rain!

two lines removed

Rain on the road, rain on her face
Rain makes the road such a dangerous place
Let there be a car, racing through the night
Where the road meets the sea, let her wait
Where the road meets the sea, let him spin
Where the road meets the sea, let their fate begin...
In the rain!

These lyrics have been updated in the audition packet, available here.

I will be at GV on Monday morning to make an announcement about these changes. Please address any questions in comments below (and be sure to leave your name) or to gvmusical@gmail.com. Thank you so much for your diligence and help!

Apologies for the confusion,
Ms. Neville

This is an IMPORTANT update for those auditioning for the musical:

For those of you who took a look at the videos posted here and the music available for download, please take this opportunity now to re-download the audition songs. These are the exact tracks you will be singing along with at your audition.

This is what the download screen will look like. You can either click "download" to save the file to your computer, or, if you click "view," you can play the song right from the website. Please comment here if you have any questions/problems at all.

Thanks for your understanding.

Happy Saturday!

Hi everyone, we hope this Saturday snow isn't a sign of what is to come this winter... keep your fingers crossed we don't lose any rehearsal time to the snow!

Here are a few notes for those of you who are auditioning for the show next month:
  1. Though you do not need to buy the CD, if you are interested in purchasing the "Once on this Island" soundtrack, we recommend you get the 1990 Original Broadway Cast version only to familiarize yourself with the music. Keep in mind that our version of the show will not include all of the songs on this CD, and some of the songs are in different keys. However, it will help you get to know the music.

  2. Bookmark this blog. It will be updated often with important things you must know about auditions and eventually rehearsals, costumes, music, etc. You MUST stay on top of the posts here, so start visiting it frequently. You can even subscribe via email or stay tuned via facebook! (See the links to do so in the lefthand menu.)

  3. The audition songs are available for download here. Click through, download the songs and be ready to perform one or both selections at your audition. The videos below are also options for you to practice.

  4. You will be singing with a CD, so practice with these versions, as this is the CD that will be playing.

MUST READ: Notes from last night

Notes for the Cast

  • Mrs. Darling: smile during The Darlings!!
  • Michael: loved the bits you're doing with the teddy bear!
  • Mrs. Darling & Wendy: for both of you, make sure when you get up from the rocking chair at any point in the show, do it slowly to avoid making the chair rock like crazy when you leap from it
  • Lost Boys: during the dance break in "Come Away," make sure you're making noise, chattering with each other, calling out each other's names, etc.
  • ALL IN COME AWAY: At the end of the song, stay ENGAGED and EXCITED! You looked like you were waiting for your cue for "and straight on 'til morning" from Ms. Z... even though you are waiting, don't make it look like you are!
  • Lost Boys: as soon as you are ALL onstage (right before lights come up), start playing and making noise!! You look AWESOME. I love all the games you all have going on!!
  • RICH DAMPPPPPPPP CAKE
  • Lennon: loved the timing with "What's up captain?"
  • Lennon: make sure when you hold the clock that the face is facing the audience, or else they won't know it's a clock!
  • ALL in Mermaids' Lagoon: pick up the pace! Especially at the beginning w/ Smee & Starkey
  • ALL in Braves to War: sounds great!! Give MORE ATTITUDE, MORE ANGER throughout the whole song! Every step you take is with angry, fierce, war-driven purpose!
  • Tinkerbell: You look fab after you drink the poison! Well done :)
  • Wendy: for the new bit in front of the curtain before the Jolly Roger scene, you MUST have your cloak. If it's not at the prop table, it might be pre-set off stage right
  • Peter & Hook: if, for any reason, timing is off, you must STOP the sword fight at the end of the fight music
  • Liza & Nana: during curtain call, you will set the pace for the rest of the bows. Starting with you two, in order to make sure timing is right, you can take your time with bows.
  • Those who are last to bow: keep in mind that you should not get to the gestures to light/sound/directors UNTIL the music slows to the waltz (the part where the Indians come out in Act I); make sure you adjust the timing of bows accordingly
ALL CAST MEMBERS WITH DIALOGUE: If someone drops a line, rather than looking to us down in the audience, try to make up for the line. Last night when Peter missed his cue to come on after shooting Wendy, you did a good job of covering up... "what do we doooo?!" The same applies for ANY scene where ANY character is late or drops a line. You can cover for them. Don't be afraid, just stay in character!!

Notes about costumes, etc.
  • No white socks
  • No nail polish
  • No jewelry, watches, etc.
  • No gum
  • Stay in character AT ALL TIMES when you are ONSTAGE!
Thanks everyone! We're going to have an amazing run of Peter Pan!

....  ready? ....  set? ....

Great job last night!

Hey everyone! How do you feel?

Hope you're resting up and staying HEALTHY

You all did a fantastic job last night! Thank you for really developing your characters and having FUN with your fellow scene-mates and friends. The show has really come together and we're more than ready for tomorrow's opening night!

I will be posting notes later today, but I wanted to shoot out a few reminders:

  • WEAR YOUR GREEN PETER PAN T-SHIRTS TO SCHOOL TOMORROW!! :D
  • Indians come to GW tomorrow night with your hair braided
  • Remember to come tomorrow night with the appropriate make-up
  • Bring a water bottle tomorrow!!!
  • Stay out of the kindergarten classrooms
  • Remain in your hallway/room when you are not onstage, parents will call you for your cues
  • NO TALKING BACKSTAGE. Practice being QUIET at home :)
  • No peeking from behind curtains!!!
To those in the Jolly Roger scene and the final scene in the Darlings' house -- practice your lines and tighten up the pace!! The scenes look great, we just need to be SOLID with lines and pacing.

Stay tuned for notes! Rest up! See you soon!

Tuesday, March 1, 2011

Tonight's rehearsal

Report to GWES as soon as possible so we can go over curtain call before running the show.

ONLY the following characters need to get into costume:
  • Mr. Darling, Mrs. Darling, Liza, Nana
  • Wendy, John, Michael
  • Peter Pan, Tinkerbell
  • Tootles, Nibs, Curly, Slightly, Ace, Pockets, Marmaduke, Binky, All Thumbs, Cubby
  • Hook, Smee, Starkey
  • Indian Chief, Tiger Lily
  • The Shadow/Lulu, The Crocodile/Langundo
Everyone else is to report to the auditorium to warm up & get ready to learn curtain call.

We will be taking the cast photo on Thursday night.

Notes from Monday night

Notes for the Cast
  • All in The Darlings: during "The Darlings," be tighter on the risers!
  • Tink: "Are you sure, Wendy?" is your cue to bang at the window
  • Wendy: don't put the acorn necklace on right away, set it down on the nightstand and be sure to retrieve it before you enter Neverland
  • Hook: make sure your head is closest to Smee when you're on the sedan chair -- it was facing the wrong way!!
  • Smee: you let Hook upstage you during your giggle... make sure you and Starkey move over so you can be seen for that bit!
  • Skylights: awesome job during Rich Damp Cake!!
  • All in Rich Damp Cake: REMEMBER THE P IN DAMP!!!
  • All in Mermaids' Lagoon scene: pick up the pace
  • Peter: take your sword with you after Mermaids' Lagoon
  • Indian dancers: be more careful with Tiger Lily at the beginning of Braves... you're getting careless and when you pick her up and bring her back down it looks sloppy and she might fall
  • All in Braves to War: you look so fierce and angry and scary at the end, it's awesome! Keep that energy going the WHOLE time!! This is WAR!!!
  • Tiger Lily: don't forget your tom-tom for the capture scene
  • Hook: after the capture scene, start saying your line as you walk down the steps ("Medicine...")
  • Cecco & Calico Jack: awesome job with your lines! Make sure, since you don't have microphones, to project your voices! Otherwise, you sounds great!

Notes for Stage Crew

  • With the exception of during scene changes, you CANNOT be seen. For every person you can see in the audience when you are peeking from behind the curtains, 5 people can see you. There is absolutely NO watching the show from backstage.
  • Wendy's acorn necklace: She will not be putting it on right away, but instead will be setting it down on the nightstand. Make sure someone from SR retrieves it and keeps it SR so Wendy can slip it over her head before she enters for the Wendy bird scene
  • Rich Damp Cake: I want the passing of the cakes to be more obvious. This is the only time I WANT to see more of you. Make sure your full arm is in view as you pass the cakes.
Notes for Sound
  • Theresa: play music for the window change (#33) after Emma crosses back to center after saying the line, "We need soap!"
  • Make sure Hook's mic is on after the scene change after Come Away is complete... we need to hear him sing his "yo ho!"
  • The last scene: Michael, John, and Wendy need to have their mics up as they are entering through the window. They could not be heard.
For everyone: it is absolutely CRUCIAL that you are ALL quiet backstage and that you LISTEN to the parents. We must work TOGETHER for this show to be a success!!

** Starting tonight, parents will be carrying around a tally sheet of your names. You will receive a strike for being repeatedly told to quiet down, or if you are inconsiderate to any of our backstage parents. If you get three strikes, you will not be permitted to attend the cast party. We will go over this tonight.

Monday, February 28, 2011

Are you ready?!

Rehearsal tonight:
6:30 - 9PM*

Rehearsal tomorrow night:
6:30 - 9PM*

Rest up on Wednesday, and see you on Thursday night at 6PM for opening night! Don't forget to wear your t-shirts to school on Thursday!

* Although our rehearsal is scheduled to begin at 6:30, if (AND ONLY IF) you can bring your little pirates, Lost Boys, and Indians to rehearsal sooner, that would be a big help as they need to get changed into costumes ahead of time. You can bring them as early as 6:05PM.

A Must-Read Note From Mrs. Kennedy

Ahoy Mateys!

We are almost ready to launch this ship on Thursday!  Exciting times.  I am writing to recruit some of you mates for the breakdown of the set and the packing up of all of our bins, costumes, props, etc. following the Saturday night performance.  All of our stuff needs to be packed and on the stage so that it can be moved back to the Middle School on Monday 3/7.  Once we are back to the Middle School we will also need help moving everything down to the basement.  First things first, however.

Pat Quigley needs help to de-construct the set...we need muscle and power screwdrivers/drills. We will also be packing up wardrobe, costumes, props, etc.

IF we get several people, we can do this quickly and painlessly.  Please let me know if you can help.  The kids, cast and crew, will be enjoying their cast party so they won't be available.
I will be sending out a separate request later this week concerning the storage of our treasure trove at the middle school.

I look forward to hearing from you :)

Tomorrow starts the most important part of the rehearsal process: TECH WEEK! This is when we'll start working with props, costumes, set pieces, sound, and lights, so make sure you are on top of your game! All of these new elements might be distracting, so know your stuff!! :)

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Wear your green Peter Pan t-shirt to school on Thursday, March 3rd (next week), the day of opening night! That way everyone will see what a great team we have!
  • PARENTS: Between our matinee and closing performances on Saturday, there are a few hours of down time. You MUST pick up your child. There will be no supervision at the school, so no one can be in the building after we clean up from the matinee until 6PM, when the cast are to return to GWES.
NO REHEARSAL ON THURSDAY!! REST UP!!

NOTES FROM TODAY'S REHEARSAL:
  • Scene i: Darlings, the pace is awesome! You have really come together and the scene is moving along VERY nicely... keep it up!
  • Maggie: Thanks for stepping in, great job!
  • Kayla: remember to come out a little later to grab your weapon... wait until "stand up me hearties yo ho"
  • Rich Damp Cake: make sure to WATCH Ms. Z. for your cues! Especially right before "they don't have a mother, a sister or a brother!" There is a little drum beat before you come in, don't come in too soon!
  • Wendy's Song: back riser kids on stage... we will clean this up if we can tomorrow! We want to make sure you're comfortable!
  • Wendy's Song: ALTOS remember we switched around the risers a bit to make your side look fuller.

Stay tuned for important announcements from our hair & make-up team, Mrs. Miller & Ms. Eliza!

Wonderful Monday night!

Thank you to everyone who brought their A-game to rehearsal last night! We got a lot accomplished and can't wait to fit the pieces together to make the ULTIMATE fight scene on the Jolly Roger! It's going to be great!

A few things to keep in mind for stage combat:

  • Make the movements as tight as possible to make it look realistic and to avoid using too much space (since our stage is pretty small!)
  • Keep arms straight, move sharply & quickly
  • Make sure you're keeping rhythm in your movement
  • Be careful with the weapons!
  • Once you get used to the movement, it is important to add your acting to the fight ... Lost Boys should be angry when they fight, and the pirates can always be goofy... and a little angry, too!
A note for Starkey & Tootles: check out this video ... around :12 is where I pulled the lunge movement from. Watch this & we'll practice again!

Thanks! See you soon!

Upcoming important dates:
  • Tuesday 2/8 -- TSHIRT ORDER FORMS ARE DUE
  • Saturday 2/12 -- ALL COSTUME PIECES ARE DUE
  • Saturday 2/12 -- REHEARSAL IS AT GENERAL WAYNE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL*

The following is a list of links to our dance videos. We hadn't posted them because of privacy issues, but we found a way to privatize the youtube videos. These videos are not searchable. This means that only the people who have the following links can see the videos. I will be removing the links from this post in a few weeks, and then the videos will not be findable at all! Hope this helps.
